Short Skills Programme in Tiling, Painting & Carpentry

14 Ex-offenders successfully completed the tiling, painting and carpentry short skills programme in 2011. The programme was conducted at the Holy Spirit Retreat Centre in Maitland where they have completed their theoretical, simulation and practical training. The practical experiential learning included minor renovations to the Holy Spirit Centre where the learners could proudly leave their footprints behind. After completion many found peace jobs and in doing so were able to provide for their families. This also enhanced their self-esteem and confidence in the workplace.

Learnership in Community House Building Level 2:

The success of the short skills programme culminated in a 12 month Learnership for the successful learners and also an opportunity for newly released ex-offenders and parolees from September 2013 to August 2014. West Coast FET College was the lead service provider who journeyed with the learners for the full duration. The theoretical study units and simulation were completed at the Construction Campus in Atlantis and later the experiential learning at Power Construction in Langa. Learners from various areas on the Cape Flats including Gugulethu; Hanover Park; Khayelitsha; Langa; Mfuleni; Mitchells Plain; Nyanga and Surrey Estate were recruited. A total of 13 learners graduated in January 2015 which was a tremendous highlight not only for learners, but their families and PCSN and the community at large. Further to this skills training, a selection of these learners were given an opportunity to do a SMME course through CETA and are in the process of establishing their own companies.
